here it is! banana banana banana bread

Filed under: cooking tips — Sara at 10:20 am on Saturday, July 12, 2008

Well while cleaning up the office yesterday I found one of my 50 copies of my mom’s banana bread. So I am posting it here so I can always find it.

My favorite banana bread:

3 ripe bananas
1 stick of butter
2 cups flour
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking soda

Mix as you always do for baking. Dry mixes first with dry. Beat butter and sugar together, add eggs and vanilla. Add mashed bananas. Slowly add flour mix.
1 hour at 350 (it always takes more than an hour).

Oh - and walnuts if you want em’.
Good stuff. Although i rarely get to make it because i will have 3 bananas sitting out that i plan to use. Almost always my banana crazy husband will come buy and eat what I consider a too ripe to eat banana. Then I am stuck with just 2 that I end up throwing out. :(

Gotta write it down

My monkey has been saying so many new words these past few days. I figured he thought he was saying real words mixed in with his babble but we couldn’t understand him. I guess another little connection has been made in his tiny brain because words are starting to sound like, well, words. He says off and on (not always correctly), when he turns the lights off and on. He has started yelling “Let’s Go!” when he is excited. Ball and fish are popular - though he has been saying fish a long time - just not many opportunities to say it. Every once in awhile I could get him to say hi, but last night he picked up his grandparents phone (backwards) and said, “Hello?”.

waking up…

after a year and a half of sleep deprivation. Yes I know it is our fault, but the past few months were especially painful. Monkey got the flu and never shook a cough after that. It was so bad he sometimes threw up at night coughing so hard. My in-laws took him to the doctor after one bad night and I had to work the next day. I was really unhappy at that point because I felt the doctor brushed aside my comment that he had been coughing for weeks when we had gone to get shots a few days prior. They gave him some antibiotic and magically cough gone!

Well nighttime got better after that but not enough. So a few days ago, after a night of Nic being up from 4-6am I went to the library and checked out baby sleep books. Yes they write books on how to get a baby to sleep - probably about 200 different ones in print right now. Well they worked great, since by the time I turned out the light after reading some that night I forgot to turn up the monitor and didn’t hear a thing. I figured the next night since we already had one night of the “extinguish” method (yes it is basically ignoring your child but at this point SOMETHING had to change) - we should keep going with it. So far it is going as the books say, he is definitely sleeping more, and I am coming out of a deep, deep fog. These past couple of days I have also worked normal hours, instead of the zombie shift, so I really almost don’t know what to do! I have been WIRED. Woke up at 7 am READY TO GO! I even have enough energy to go work out! As soon as monkey wakes up we are going to the gym. Happy Birthday to me!!!!

IT’S OPEN!

If I didn’t have a toddler I may have been there today, camped out. Like these people:Flickr photos of Ohio IKEA.
But I will be there. Soon, very soon.

He started throwing a fit when I picked him up so we went around the end of our street one more time. Just like his wagon he likes to just lean back and be pulled around by his subjects. The bottle? An empty vitamin package that is among his toiletries that he likes to organize.

Nic News

Well it has been awhile since I wrote anything. Nic is taking a nap so maybe I have a few moments. Nic had his first birthday party a few weeks ago. Since he didn’t tell me what type of party he wanted we threw him a luau. With City BBQ. Close enough, I threw in some hawaiian side dishes. He did NOT like his birthday cake, but he looked cute in his tropical shirt. I guess I should put up some pictures.

The biggest accomplishment Nic has had this summer is walking. I was surprised how quickly he got the hang of it. Once it started he was pretty much good to go after 3 weeks of falling. Lately it has been his comprehension of what I am saying that surprises me. I have read and agreed with the idea that you should talk to babies like they understand you because someday they will - and every day he understands a little more. Last week he was walking by a big stuffed tiger that his grandparents gave him. I said, “Aren’t you going to say hello to the tiger? He wants to say hi”. He stopped, turned around, looked down and petted the tiger. I had no idea he could associate the word “tiger” with the stuffed animal. Since he refuses to wave bye-bye still. Someone’s up - gotta go.

why not babyproof the baby?

what happened to 6 months?

Filed under: little monkey — Sara at 5:55 pm on Thursday, May 3, 2007

My kid is 7 months old. What happened to April? The day after I posted that he didn’t roll to get places - well he started rolling to get places. Not much progress on the crawling but he likes to try. He can push himself up from lying to a full sitting position, just in the past few days. He sometimes seems to be trying to pull himself up.

Nic and I fought off a cold a couple of weeks ago. Well he fought it off. But he learned to make this long grunting noise from I guess having his nose stopped up. Usually he makes it when one of us is holding him and he is relaxed or after he has finished a meal. He seems to make the noise when he is just chillin’. It is pretty entertaining. The screams and laughs continue. Is it a universal baby thing to love zurberts on their tummies?

He is a happy baby. and now that he is (just starting) to sometimes sleep through the night we will be happier too! Of course, we wake up multiple times a night and sometimes check on him.

In the past few days I started bugging Nic to show us where our noses are. And he actually responded! He went from grabbing our noses 50% of the time to 75% in just a couple of days. This is of course totally dependent on how interesting we are to him at any given time or if the ceiling fan is vying for his attention. He is getting a little bit harder to control during diaper changing time - hasn’t resulted in any hazmat situations yet but I am sure it is not far off.

Monday night will be his first night at Grandma’s house with both of us not there. He will have a great time I suspect while I will be a wreck.

Note: I am turning off comments for awhile because for some reason I am getting spammed. I am sure there are ways to keep from getting spammed but I dont have time to figure it out.

i found a good thing about having a cold

Feel free to send it to him. You should probably buy it in a 12 month size - just so he can wear it for at least the next 2 weeks.

I realized yesterday that this year I graduated from college 10 years ago. And I am still paying on a student loan.

NOW I UNDERSTAND

Filed under: family, incoherent thought, just complainin', little monkey — Sara at 7:03 am on Tuesday, April 10, 2007

Why some women TAKE OVER and become the boss when it comes to the child rearing. But let me begin by saying my hubby is the best dad. BUT. I have always held sleep as a top priority in my life and it is even more precious since Nic took over.

When you have a kid, even if you are not a “schedule Nazi” (my friend’s label, not mine), after a couple months that kid falls into a schedule. It may not be the schedule you want. But if you are at all consistent, not taking your baby to the bar one night, putting him to sleep at 5 pm the next, the kid at least figures out that when the sun goes down some time of extended sleep is needed and wanted by his parents.

Well a birthday party occured than Easter followed. The next day, nothing exciting happenned in Nic’s life so he fell into a deep sleep a little early, before 7pm. After an hour, I expressed some concern that MAYBE WE SHOULD WAKE HIM AND GIVE HIM A BATH OR SOMETHING.

“Maybe he is going through a growth spurt” was my husband’s reply.

And because I was tired already I let it go.
And it went, until 2:45am.
That is when Nic woke up and thought it was morning.
And my husband had to leave the room because he had to get up early to go to work.
How convenient.
I am appointing myself the boss. Second to Nic.

I think all my complaining for the past 8 months has been about sleep deprivation.

6 Months!

6 months - half a year old. Nic, you had your 6 month check up a few days ago. You got 2 shots, you cried. For about 3 seconds. Then I picked you up and you forgot all about it. You weigh 19 lbs, 8 ounces. You have dropped from the 95% in weight and height to the 75-90%. You currently have a horrendous diaper rash that doesn’t seem to bother you at all. The doctor told me that it was a yeast rash instead of regular diaper rash but the stuff he told me to buy only seems in making it worse.

The day we got back from our Savannah trip, March 9th, you rolled over for the first time. Of course, I missed it. I had just put you down on your activity mat and turned around to change the TV to the weather channel. I turned back and you were on your stomach. You roll over all the time but only to get at something just out of reach, you haven’t figured out that it could get you anywhere. And why would you bother? You have 2 parents to carry you everywhere. Although, you are starting to push up on your hands more and the other day you got a knee under you at the same time.

You have been “talking” for awhile, but now you are taking it to new decibal levels. You squeal more, too. But you go in bursts. Some days you’ll wake up having deep conversations with the ceiling fan. And some days you and I won’t have a “conversation” until the evening. But your jumparoo is always a good place for yelling and it is becoming easier to get a laugh out of you.

I still can’t always get you to smile at the camera. You recognize the camera; you open your eyes and mouth wide and get all excited - but only sometimes a smile. Consequently, alot of your pictures look the same - this “whatcha doin’ ?” look.

You are becoming more stable at sitting upright. You haven’t figured out how to push yourself up from lying down yet. But last week your grandma in Cincy half propped you up with pillows and you pushed yourself up from that starting point. You also took a face dive into one of your toys because I wasn’t quick enough. Sorry buddy.

6 months seems to have gone by quickly and we needed to make some purchases. You cleaned up last week! You got a highchair, a new bigger car seat, and your grandparents in Columbus bought you a jogger stroller. I love it, you seem a little less impressed with the new stuff. In fact, although you seem more comfortable, you are complaining more about being in the car. I hope it is a short phase. You also got some toys from your nieces, including a leapfrog that had never been opened! It’s pink, hope you don’t mind, you will be using it anyway.

The nicer weather has us going outside more, you seem to enjoy it. You will sit contently in my lap just looking around, especially if cousins are around. The stroller you seem to tolerate. Usually you just fall asleep in it.

Probably the biggest thing these past few weeks is your intro in the world of solid foods. We’ve been trying for awhile, but now you are eating regularly. I guess regularly because none of the books really say how much you should be eating. This annoys me - ALOT. From my job, I am use to guidelines, rules, regulations, checklists. I am taught exactly how to do almost everything ONE CERTAIN WAY. I have no idea if it is normal for you to be eating half a jar of food or 2 jars of food for your weight and age. Am I suppose to be giving you cereal at every meal, or sometimes just veggies? When I asked the doctor about it (after questioning the safety of soy formula), he said, “Whatever, he is healthy” and looked at me as if I was one of those crazy protective mothers. WHATEVER.

I love you buddy.

New hair

Originally uploaded by ShineTrue.

When you get pregnant your hair is suppose to get thicker. Mine fell out. After pregnancy you are suppose to lose the thicker hair. My already thinner hair fell out some more. Hopefully it will grow back (it seems to be). I am just helping the new hair catch up to the old.

Plus I was getting tired of constantly picking my hair off Nicolas.

CONGRATS!

Congratulations to our friends Aaron and Sara - they had their first child today around 3 pm! She delivered at the same hospital we had Nic. At her baby shower I found out she wanted to have a “natural” childbirth. I almost passed out at just the thought of it but tried to be supportive. Well she ended up getting an epidural, and at 9lbs, 8 ounces who can blame her? It was a boy who almost was to long for the charts - over 21 inches long. She had to be induced and although I haven’t talked to her yet, I can bet she was glad they didn’t wait any longer.

first looks

Last Monday we had to put Atticus to sleep. He was around 12 years old. Within 24 hours the previous Friday gone from jumping up on th couch to barely being able to walk. It was weird for the first few days because I kept walking into our bathroom (his favorite spot) and expecting to see him. At night I was still looking to avoid him on our dark floors (he liked to lay in the middle of the hallway). And whenever we returned home for a second I would wonder why he hadn’t come to greet us.

He hasn’t gained much weight since 3 months, but that is probably a good thing seeing he was already at 16 lbs. He and his 10 month cousin weigh about the same. He squealled yesterday for the first time. He tries to giggle but of he really starts to get into it he gives himself the hiccups. He likes to be propped up and gets frustrated if you are a little slow in helping him sit up. But he is more patient waiting for his bottle - if he knows you are making one. Nic likes to grab things and is just in the past few days begining to “explore” our faces with his hands. He got a little spoiled while he was sick after Christmas but we are working on that. He has always been cuddly, but now he grabs hold of you and if you put him down at the wrong time he has learned to make this heartbreaking face so that you will pick him back up. He has learned quickly how to manipulate!
